The biggest jaw-dropper of the bunch is Absolute Batman, an adult-oriented 3D CGI series that completely strips Bruce Wayne of his billionaire status.

DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation just dropped some massive news at the Annecy Film Festival, and they are completely rewriting the rulebook for their most iconic heroes. Instead of sticking to the usual formulas, they are launching three wildly different animated projects that range from adult sci-fi to historic anime, and even a lighthearted comedy. The biggest jaw-dropper of the bunch is Absolute Batman, an adult-oriented 3D CGI series that completely strips Bruce Wayne of his billionaire status. In this reimagined world, there is no Wayne Manor, no infinite tech budget, and no loyal butler Alfred to patch him up. Instead, we are getting a gritty, blue-collar, working-class Batman who has to fight crime without a safety net. To make sure the adaptation stays true to its comic roots, the original creators, Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, are steering the ship, with Snyder stepping up as the showrunner. But Batman isn’t the only one getting a makeover. DC is also diving headfirst into uncharted territory with Joker: Laugh Riot, which will officially be their first-ever anime series. And on the complete opposite end of the tonal spectrum, they are developing an untitled comedy series centered entirely around Krypto, Superman’s loyal super-dog. It’s a bold slate that proves DC is willing to take some major creative risks with their most famous characters.
