Wicked For Good One Year Later: The Finale That Refused to Fade

Wicked For Good one year later is a story of two very different receptions. Jon M. Chu’s second and final chapter of the Wicked saga arrived in cinemas on November 21, 2025, almost exactly one year after the first film enchanted audiences around the world. It closed the story of Elphaba and Glinda, the two witches whose friendship defined the most successful stage-to-screen musical adaptation of recent years, and it did so in front of an audience that was deeply, passionately divided about the result.

The numbers tell the first half of the story. Wicked: For Good ended its theatrical run with about $533 million worldwide, a strong result for a movie musical that, combined with the first film’s roughly $746 million, turned the adaptation into a billion-dollar franchise. But it was a clear step down from part one, with a far cooler critical reception.

A Critical Split That Defined the Film

The first Wicked earned an 88 percent critics’ score and a 95 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, plus ten Academy Award nominations and two wins, for costume design and production design. Wicked: For Good, by contrast, holds a 66 percent critics’ score, barely fresh, while audiences gave it a 92 percent approval rating. It was also shut out entirely at the Academy Awards, despite the first film’s success.

That split is the key to understanding the film’s first year. Critics found the second act darker, heavier and less joyful than the first, while audiences embraced exactly that emotional weight. Erivo’s Elphaba, fighting the Wizard’s regime from exile, and Grande’s Glinda, celebrated as good while doubting the story she is asked to sell, gave fans the farewell they wanted, even if reviewers wanted a lighter touch.

The Streaming Second Life

Where Wicked: For Good truly found its second wind was at home. The film arrived on digital platforms on December 31, 2025, moved to Peacock on March 20, 2026, and topped the streaming charts there within a day of its debut. In July 2026 it moved to Netflix under Universal’s second-window deal and shot straight to the top of the charts again, if only briefly.

That afterlife mirrors the first film’s staying power: the original Wicked was named the most-streamed movie of 2025 in the United States, with 8.4 billion minutes watched across Peacock and Prime Video. The sequel’s chart-topping debuts on two platforms suggest the same loyal audience keeps returning. By September 2026 the sequel had returned to Peacock, which now holds both films as a ready-made double feature.

What the Future Holds for Oz

So far, there is no official confirmation of a new entry in the Wicked film universe. Universal has not announced a third film, and the two-part adaptation completed the story of the stage musical in full. That has not stopped speculation, given the franchise’s billion-dollar box office and enormous streaming footprint, but for now the honest position is that Elphaba and Glinda’s story is complete on screen.

What continues is the work behind it: Grande returned to music in 2026, Chu received the Art Directors Guild’s 2026 Cinematic Imagery Award, and the stage musical, running since 2003, keeps introducing new audiences to Oz.

Wicked For Good One Year Later: The Finale

One year on, Wicked: For Good looks less like a disappointment and more like a case study in how modern blockbusters are judged. A film can underperform its predecessor, divide critics, miss out on awards, and become a cultural fixture through streaming. Like other major franchise conclusions covered on this site, including Shrek 5, it shows that the theatrical run is no longer the whole story.

For fans, the two films together deliver the complete arc of a friendship that changed both women for good, in a story that rewards repeat viewing. Whether Universal ever returns to Oz, the two films have already secured their place as the definitive screen version of the musical.

Both films stream on Peacock, with the sequel also available to rent or buy digitally. Wicked For Good one year later is still finding new viewers — Oz is still open for visitors.
