The Witcher Season 5: The Final Season Moves to 2027 After Season 4’s Rocky Reception

The Witcher Season 5 Is Now a 2027 Story

The Witcher Season 5 was supposed to be one of Netflix’s big releases of 2026. Filmed back to back with season four, it wrapped production in September 2025, a month before season four premiered, and in January 2026 Netflix’s own preview still listed the finale among its major upcoming titles. Then, quietly, it vanished.

Over the summer of 2026 it disappeared from Netflix’s 2026 promotions, and reporting from What’s on Netflix confirmed the release had shifted to 2027. As of late October 2026, Netflix has not announced a month, released a trailer, or publicly explained the move. For a season already shot, that silence is the story: the end of Geralt’s journey exists, finished, and fans must wait at least another year to see it.

The Witcher Season 5: Season 4’s Impact

To understand the delay, look at what happened when season four arrived on October 30, 2025. It was Liam Hemsworth’s debut as Geralt, taking over from Henry Cavill, who had played the White Wolf for three seasons. The season opened with 7.4 million views in its first four days, per Netflix’s own data, down from 15.2 million for season three and 18.5 million for season two. In the US, Samba TV reported 577,000 households watched the premiere, versus 885,000 for season three.

Reviews were harsher still: season four sits at a series-low on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics in the high 50s and an audience score around 20 percent. Some fans blamed the writing and the drift from Sapkowski’s books; others never accepted a new Geralt at all. Hissrich has defended the adaptation choices, but the numbers are unambiguous.

The Witcher Season 5 Coverage

The good news is that the ending is already mapped out. Season five adapts the final stretch of Sapkowski’s saga, The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake, concluding the stories of Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer. Hemsworth returns for his second and final season, alongside Freya Allan as Ciri and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, with Sharlto Copley back as Leo Bonhart.

Hissrich has described seasons four and five as one big story split in half, so season five should pick up directly from season four’s cliffhangers. That structure is both promise and risk: viewers who stayed will get a payoff built for them, but the finale inherits the same tone and controversies that divided the audience a year ago.

The Witcher Season 5 Wait

There are two ways to read a delay that pushes a finished season into 2027. The generous reading is that Netflix is giving its finale room to breathe, away from a crowded 2026 slate, with time for post-production on an effects-heavy final chapter. The harsher reading is that the chilly response to season four made the streamer reluctant to place the finale prominently.

Either way, the gap carries a real cost: by the time season five arrives, over a year will have passed since season four, and the show risks fading from the conversation entirely. The franchise has other life, including a new Witcher 3 game expansion announced in May 2026, but the Netflix series faces its final test with a smaller, wearier audience than it once commanded.

The Witcher Season 5 Finale

Like other long-running fantasy sagas covered on this site, including House of the Dragon, The Witcher is now a story about how it ends. Season five has one job: to give Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer an ending that feels earned, whatever viewers thought of the road there. A satisfying finale could rehabilitate the Hemsworth era in retrospect. A weak one would confirm the doubts that have followed the show since Cavill’s departure.

For now, seasons one through four stream on Netflix, alongside the special The Rats: A Witcher Tale. The White Wolf’s last hunt is coming, just later than anyone planned.

The next news will be a date, a trailer, or an official Netflix statement, none of which had arrived as of late October 2026. Until then, treat any claimed 2027 month as unconfirmed, and the 2027 window itself as reported, not officially announced, for The Witcher Season 5.
