The Batman Part II Production Update: Filming Resumes as Soderbergh Helps Finish the Shoot

After a long pause and a wave of confusing headlines, the road back to Gotham looks clearer. The Batman Part II is filming again, director Matt Reeves remains in charge, an acclaimed colleague is helping finish the shoot, and the sequel still aims for February 2028.

The first film, released in March 2022, turned Gotham into a rain-soaked detective story. Fans have waited through script delays and date changes, so this update matters: it explains where the film stands now, and why those closest to it sound relieved rather than alarmed.

Filming paused in October, then restarted

Production began in London in 2026, with filming reported to have started in May or June depending on the outlet. In early October, DC Studios confirmed that production had been temporarily paused while Reeves focused on what the studio described as a family matter. The studio said Reeves had its full support and that it looked forward to continuing the journey soon.

Reports at the time said roughly two-thirds of the film had already been shot, although that figure was not confirmed by DC Studios and should be treated as a report. By late October, Pattinson told GamesRadar+ that production was back under way and that he was due back on set within days: “I think they’re in production already. And I’m starting in a couple of days.”

Why Steven Soderbergh stepped in

The most talked-about part of the update is the involvement of Steven Soderbergh, the Oscar-winning director behind Traffic and Ocean’s Eleven. According to Deadline, Soderbergh volunteered to help after expressing admiration for Reeves’ work on the first film. DC Studios confirmed that Soderbergh would help complete the final weeks of principal photography.

Crucially, this is not a replacement. Reeves said he is not leaving the project, and DC Studios chief James Gunn confirmed Reeves remains the director. Soderbergh will work closely with Reeves and his team so new footage fits what has already been shot, and Reeves is expected to oversee post-production.

Pattinson called Soderbergh’s help generous and selfless, and said the production was almost done. That tone — gratitude, not crisis — signals a practical solution to a temporary absence, rather than a creative takeover.

What is confirmed about the cast and story

Reeves confirmed the core returning cast in May 2026 through a series of social media posts. Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman, alongside Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, also known as the Penguin, Jayme Lawson as Mayor Bella Reál, and Gil Perez-Abraham as Officer Martinez.

Other casting reports need care: outlets have reported Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, and Charles Dance may be involved, with Stan linked in reports to Harvey Dent, and that Barry Keoghan could return as the Joker — but none of these are confirmed like the returning cast. The same caution applies to plot: no official logline has been released, and reports of a snowy Gotham winter setting are unconfirmed. Reeves has said he and co-writer Mattson Tomlin wanted to dig deeper into Bruce Wayne, the man behind the mask.

The release date, and what to watch next

The Batman Part II has already moved several times. It was once planned for October 2025, then October 2027, before landing on its current date of February 18, 2028. As of the latest October 2026 reports, that February 2028 date has not changed, and outlets covering the resumed shoot have noted that it remains the target.

That does not guarantee the date will hold — a paused shoot can ripple through editing and effects. The test now is whether filming wraps cleanly and Reeves returns to post-production as planned. For now, the update is encouraging: the film is shooting again, its director is still its director, and its star is heading back to set.
